September Is Library Card Sign-up Month
September often means new backpacks, freshly sharpened pencils, and one supply that’s often overlooked but tremendously valuable: a library card. Every September, the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country come together for Library Card Sign-up Month, a nationwide push to make sure every child and adult has a card of their own.
This year, the celebration has some extra star power.
Laufey Takes the Stage as Honorary Chair
Icelandic-Chinese singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Laufey has been named honorary chair of Library Card Sign-up Month 2026. Known for blending jazz and classical influences into her music, Laufey will spend September joining ALA and libraries nationwide encouraging everyone to get a library card.
Laufey is also joining ALA’s celebrity READ® campaign.
A Tradition Since 1987
Library Card Sign-up Month has been a September tradition since 1987, timed to coincide with the start of the school year. The idea is simple: as students head back to the classroom, libraries want to make sure they’re equipped with one of the most powerful (and free) tools available to them — a library card.
Throughout the school year, librarians and library staff help parents and caregivers save hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services, including:
- Free access to STEAM programs and hands-on activities
- Educational apps and digital learning tools
- In-person and virtual homework help
- Technology workshops for kids and adults alike
- The everyday expertise of librarians who are ready to help
When you add it all up, a library card might just be the most cost-effective back-to-school purchase. Especially since it’s free!
A Special Perk This September
To celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month, at Westfield Washington Public Library, we’re offering a 3D printed travel library card protector, stamped with 09/26, while supplies last. It’s a small, fun way to keep your card safe and show that you signed up during this year’s celebration.
How to Get Your Card
Getting a library card has never been easier.
You can stop by the library during regular hours and sign up in person. Pre-register online up to seven days in advance at evergreen.lib.in.us/eg/opac/register. Cards are only issued in-person and will not be mailed.
You will need a valid government-issued photo ID and proof of residency within Westfield Washington Township if your ID doesn’t list your Westfield address.
